802.11n: An Investment that Pays for Itself

Wireless LANs based on 802.11n combine the best of both worlds: For the first time, with net transmission speeds of more than 100 Mbps per radio, they are faster than a Fast Ethernet LAN; they are flexible, secure and, thanks to their great range of optimum coverage, they also provide excellent signal quality even at great distances.
There’s more: Frequently, constructing an 802.11n WLAN requires less infrastructure than with older equipment. The result is a substantially higher performance network with lower investment costs.

The Correct Band Choice for 802.11n – 2.4 or 5 GHz?

Access points can support both the 2.4 and the 5 GHz bands. Which one is “right” for your Wi-Fi network depends on the type of application and the on-site conditions.

2.4 GHz band: Many wireless LAN clients, particularly older models, only support the 2.4 GHz band. If the WLAN is to allow for the communication of these clients, then operation in the 2.4. GHz band is essential.
Disadvantage: This frequency range is often overcrowded and less overall bandwidth is available because mechanisms such as channel bundling are not available.

5 GHz band: This frequency allows 802.11n to demonstrate its true strength and attain the highest data transmission rates. Anyone designing a completely new WLAN should choose to operate using the 5 GHz band.
Additional advantage: This band is used by fewer wireless applications, so less interference is to be expected. The most flexibility with the highest performance is provided by the mixed operation of both bands.

802.11n single-radio or dual-radio: Which Access Point for which Application?

You can choose access points with one or with two radio modules (single/dual radio). Single radio devices are cheaper and are a very cost effective choice. They support both of the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands but can only operate in one band at any moment in time. For those wanting mixed operation for reasons of performance and flexibility, dual radio devices provide the perfect solution because they can work with both bands simultaneously.
